This submission is an understated entry, from a long time ago. It’s kind of a quirky song, with one of my favorite song structures.
I did a little lyric fixing on this one in the last year. Quite frankly, I initially intended to take out the reference to the hamster on the spinning wheel in the second verse. Once I did it, though, I immediately regretted it. Part of the song’s charm for me is that the narrator’s angle is somewhat sarcastic (“I can tell”), and it lost too much of that tone without the worn out, exhausted hamster. I also came to find I really liked that little visual. It relieves some tension in a song that’s largely about stern silence.
