This one’s about turning down a relationship opportunity because all is not right with yourself. It came to me because I seemed to run into an inordinate number of people that wanted to work on themselves. Of course, in time, I realized that “I need to work on myself first” was code for “I’d rather be by myself than with you.” After encountering this excuse entirely too often, I finally wrote a song about it.
When I was recording this one, it resonated with me a different way. I’m in a quiet space in my life, and having that space has been really healthy. I hope I’ve captured some of that feeling in the song.
