Giving Up

This one’s about 10 years old, but I revamped it pretty significantly in 2015. It was actually the first of the 170 songs I recorded. The lyrics here are a little trite, but I tried to offset that with the rhyming schemes. The tune doesn’t really allow for a lot of lyrical complication—I sorted of boxed myself in.

We took off “Selfish” this rotation. Thanks again for listening.

You’re the One for Me

This one is a pretty simple one, from a number of years ago. This song was another one buried on a tape for a few years before I realized there was another way to go at it. Also, I’m always happy to find a way to get in a reference to home (Waikiki).

Hate In My Heart

This is about a relationship that’s about to blow up on you, and searching for something that you can use to start distancing yourself from the other person. It’s about finding the hate in your heart you don’t really have.

I angered-up this one a little from preliminary versions, but I think this song could work a few ways. I debated recording a more quiet, whispered version… but ultimately decided this version was a little more fun.

We took off “Heart on Both Sleeves” this week. Thanks again for listening.

Drifting Towards Friends

Oh man…welcome to what’s likely the oldest song I’ll ever post. This goes all the way back to college. My wife has liked the song all along, but I didn’t get over the hump with it until 2014, when I sped it up, killed a verse, moved it up a step, and added a new, Petty-like bridge. I think I’ve just about killed the granola-college influence, but there may be a little left over (maybe enough to differentiate it from my other stuff).

In terms of the topic, it’s somewhat of a distant sister song to Before We Got to Here. In this case, these two know a lot about each other at the front end of the relationship, and they can picture where they’ll have problems in the long run. The difference is, in this case, no one actually moves forward.

We took off “Maybe” this week. Thanks again for listening…

I’m Not Sure

This submission is an understated entry, from a long time ago. It’s kind of a quirky song, with one of my favorite song structures.

I did a little lyric fixing on this one in the last year. Quite frankly, I initially intended to take out the reference to the hamster on the spinning wheel in the second verse. Once I did it, though, I immediately regretted it. Part of the song’s charm for me is that the narrator’s angle is somewhat sarcastic (“I can tell”), and it lost too much of that tone without the worn out, exhausted hamster. I also came to find I really liked that little visual. It relieves some tension in a song that’s largely about stern silence.

I took off “Can’t Find Myself” this week. As usual, let me know what you think of the site and the songs at gregorsongs@gmail.com. Thanks for listening.
